My mother called me to her bedside
These words she said to me
If you don't quit your rambling ways
They're gonna get you in the penetentiary
Gonna get you in the penetentiary poor boy
Gonna get you in the penetentiary
If you don't quit your reckless ways
They're gonna get you in the penetentiary
Well the jury said I had to pay
And the clerk he wrote it down
And the judge called out my number
Two sixes upside down
Two sixes upside down poor boy
Two sixes upside down
The judge called out my number
Two sixes upside down

You know, I could hardly dislike Scooter more.
But the civil libertarian in me never likes to see anyone go to prison.
And that's especially true for someone caught in a classic grand jury "perjury trap" by an overzealous federal prosecutor.
I didn't like it when they did it to Clinton (and I liked Clinton only somewhat more than Libby)
I really don't like it when they do it to activists, and that happens a lot.
So, no, I don't like it when they do it to this slimeball either.

It's a point well-taken, and thank you for being more principled that I was feeling this morning. I did notice as I was posting the contradiction between gloating over Scooter Libby going to prison and my finger-waggin' scold at all of America for being glad that Paris Hilton is going to jail.
I think it's worth pointing out, though, that (Fitzgerald's over-reaching or no) the Scooter Libby trial (everything about it, including the defense's surprise strategy) represented a major split in the ruling class. Paris getting locked up (and folks' glee about it) represents only a fatuous, fake, infuriating, false iconoclasm -- Watch us smash our own idols! That just makes me mad, I can't help it.
